Where is Jesus Now?

Jesus’ time of ministry on earth lasted a very short three years.  It might be strange to think about (at least it is for me) to think that the vast majority of history, The Son (“The Son” wouldn’t be called “Jesus” until the incarnation) has not been on earth, but rather in heaven.  So, where is Jesus now?  What is He doing?  What will it be like when He returns?

Where is Jesus Now?

After Jesus resurrected, He appeared to his disciples and over 500 other people.  The first chapter of Acts tells us that Jesus said goodbye to his followers and then rose into the sky and was lost from sight. The bible tells us a few things about Jesus’ whereabouts.  It tells us that He is “sitting at the right hand of the father” (Hebrews 1:3).  He is in heaven in the “sanctuary of the true tabernacle”.  In plain English, this means that he is in the holiest place there is; the sanctuary of heaven.

What is Jesus Doing?

When Jesus spoke to his disciples in John 14, He told them that he was going to prepare a place for them.  Presumably, this is heaven.  So, right now, Jesus is “sitting at the right hand of the father”, which is symbolic of honor and authority. So He is ruling the universe with God the Father and the Holy Spirit, preparing heaven for us.  Also, once He returned to heaven, he entered the sanctuary (Hebrews 8:2), by his own blood (Hebrews 9:12) and acted as the mediator between believers and God (Hebrews 9:15).  He now acts as the high priest forever for believers as well (Hebrews 6:17, 24).

What will Jesus’ Return Be Like?

Jesus’ return will be met with two reactions: unimaginable joy for believers, and complete terror for those who are not believers.  Revelation 19 has an amazing picture of Jesus’ return, not as the meek and mild Jesus that seems to be so common in the church today, but rather as a warrior, priest, king ready to judge the wicked and be united with believers.  He will be joined by an army of angels, and believers will be caught up with him in the sky as he returns (1 Thessalonians 4:16.).
